IJGT Philly Junior at Turtle Creek - Final Results

Massimino Birdies Final Hole for One Stroke Victory

The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) traveled to Turtle Creek Golf Course for the 2012 IJGT Philly Junior on Sept. 22-23. Over seventy-five of the top junior golfers in the northeast fought through windy conditions all weekend for what turned out to be the tightest battle of the season in the nationally ranked junior event.

Roland Massimino from Lumberville, Pa. had one thought on his mind as he made the turn for his final nine holes on Sunday, not again, as he sat four strokes over par. Massimino was referring to his second round just three weeks ago at the IJGT Labor Day Classic at Hershey Country Club, where he saw the Boys 15-19 division title slip through his fingers and into the hands of Carey Bina from Villanova, Pa.

"My mindset was to just not think about the lead," said Massimino. "I just concentrated on playing the way I've been playing."

Massimino showed that he was able to put his last four holes at Hershey far behind him with a one-under-par finish in his last four holes this time around at Turtle Creek. His 12-foot birdie putt on hole 18 tuned out to be the difference, as he captured the Boys 15-19 division title by a single stroke over Armando Olivieri (74-74) from Greenwich, Conn. Kyle Kroen from Basking Ridge, N.J. rounded out the top three finishers with rounds of 75-74 for a tournament total of 149.

With his victory on Sunday, Massimino not only captured his first tour win of the season, but also took over the lead in the IJGT Merit Points standings.

Camden, Del. native Sam Leite came to Turtle Creek for her first IJGT appearance of the season and she did not disappoint. Her first round 75 (+3) gave her the lead in the Girls division by a six-stroke margin, with Elizabeth Gudas from Binghamton, N.Y. the closest competitor within reach with her first round 81 (+9).

"I was really putting well this weekend," said Leite. "I just felt like everything was dropping."

Leite carried her six-stroke lead into Sunday and never looked back. She cruised to a final round 77 (+5) to run away with the Girls division title by a monster 12 shots, leaving all others in the field battling for second place. Raphaella Kang from Bayside, N.Y. won that battle with rounds of 82-82 for her third straight runner-up finish on the IJGT this season. Gudas' final round 85 (+13) had her slipping to third place behind Kang in her first IJGT outing of the season.

Kang's third straight second place finish was able to boost her to the top of the IJGT Merit Point standings on the season, which she will continue to build on as the season progresses.

In the Boys U-14 division, Evan Johnson from York, Pa. found himself sitting a sizeable eight strokes back after his opening round 82 (+10). Johnson and the rest of the field were all chasing down the Media, Pa. native Griff Colvin after he posted his two-over 74 on Saturday.

Johnson saw that eight-stroke margin as nothing more than the next obstacle he was about to tackle, as he fought through the chilly temperatures in the early morning tee-times at Turtle Creek on Sunday.

Johnson's final round 73 (+1) was just enough to put him in a two-way tie for the Boys U-14 title with Colvin. It took two extra holes in the sudden-death playoff between Johnson and Colvin to name the Philly Junior champion. After both juniors pared the first hole, Johnson captured the victory with an eight-foot birdie on the par-5 second. Brett Insera from Upper Saddle River, N.J. finished in third place with rounds of 76-80.

With a final round 70 (-2), Sam Ignatuk from Boonton, N.J. took home the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award belt courtesy of IJGT sponsor Clazic Belts, while Girls champion, Leite, captured the honor for the Girls.

The IJGT will move on to Timber Banks Golf Course in Baldwinsville, N.Y. next week for the IJGT Upstate Challenge. The field is set for an exciting event at the Jack Nicklaus Design golf course. The first round of competition will begin on Saturday at 9:30 am. This event will be ranked by Golfweek and Junior Golf Scoreboard.
