Final Results - IJGT Major Championship at Nemacolin Woodlands

Martinez Captures First IJGT Major Title

Cold weather and heavy winds could not stop the competitors of the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) from competing in the 2013 Western Pa. Major at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pa., April 20-21. The first major of the Northeast swing hosted some of the top juniors from across the world representing eight states and two countries. In the first round, competitors battled through frigid temperatures and heavy winds on the Links Course. Sunday's exciting final round was played on the Pete Dye designed Mystic Rock, which hosted the PGA TOUR's 84 Lumber Classic from 2003-2006.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Bernardo Martinez of Mexico City, Mexico, had a spectacular weekend. On the Links Course, Martinez had a rocky start on the front nine, but quickly turned it around with one birdie and eight pars on the back nine carding a first round 4-over-par 74. His superb back nine put him in contention for a first-place title as he trailed first-round leader, and KENTWOOL Lo-Pro Award winner Matt Barto of Leechburg, Pa., by just one stroke.

During the final round, Martinez carried his momentum to the Mystic Rock Course. He found himself ahead of Barto at the turn, after carding a 1-over-par 37 on the front nine. With the championship trophy in his sights, Martinez never let up and took home his first IJGT title and double IJGT Merit Points after carding a weekend 6-over-par 148.

"It feels great," Martinez said. "This is my first {first place finish} in seven years, and I was very determined to win."

Finishing just behind Martinez was Barto, who shot a weekend 8-over-par 150. Rounding out the Boys 15-19 Division in third place was Luis Ruiz of Mexico City, Mexico carding a 9-over-par 151.

In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Nate Menon of Wyomissing, Pa., never looked back after taking the lead on Saturday. His first round 4-over-par 74 gave him a two-stroke lead over Luke Schaap of Potomac, Md., heading into Sunday. On the Mystic Rock Course, Menon started off strong with two quick birdies, but Schaap was close behind still trailing by two strokes at the turn. Menon made par on the last seven holes and carded a second-round 1-over-par 73. Menon's clutch play in the final round play earned him Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award honors and his first IJGT Title of the season with a weekend score of 147.

"I have finished in the top three the past couple of weeks and it feels great to win," said Menon.

Finishing second just behind Menon was Schaap, carding a weekend 8-over-par 150. Taking third place in the Boys 14 & Under Division were Ben Reichert of East Amherst, N.Y., and William Thomson of Pittsford, N.Y., who both carded a final score of 154.

The final round in the Girls Division was as close as they come with three talented girls all battling for first place and double IJGT Merit Points. Caroline Quamme of McLean, Va., earned KENTWOOL Lo-Pro Award honors after carding a first-round 83, but Maddy McDanel of Aliquippa, Pa., and Emily Doyle of Horseheads, N.Y., were nipping at her heels as they took to the tee on the challenging Mystic Rock Course. McDanel took the lead after the turn with her front-nine 3-over-par 39. With a birdie on No. 10, McDanel never let off the gas pedal and took home the Girls Division Title with a weekend score of 164. McDanel also earned Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award honors after she carded a 7-over-par 79 on Sunday.

"It feels really good {to win} and I am really excited about it," said McDanel. "I just wanted to play my best in the final round and have fun."

Finishing second in the Girls Division was Quamme, who finished just one stroke behind McDanel carding a weekend 165. Rounding out the top three Girls Division was Doyle carding a tournament total of 168.
