Messick Takes Home First Title

The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) hosted the IJGT Junior at Hershey Links at the beautiful Hershey Links Golf Club in Hummelstown, Pa., April 6-7. The field was comprised of 90 juniors from two countries, nine states, and Washington D.C., all competing for national recognition and IJGT Merit Points.

After a picture perfect day of practice rounds on Friday, cold temperatures and strong winds made the tournament difficult for everyone involved. However, the weather didn't prevent the competition from producing low scores, including an impressive hole-in-one.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Connor Messick of Oak Hill, Va., came into the second round tied after he carded an even-par 72 during the first round of play. Messick was in a three-way-tie with Jake Reilly of Hershey, Pa., and Joseph Tigani of Hockessin, Del., which earned all of them the KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro Award.

The second round was competitive all the way to No. 18, with the lead group being separated by just one stroke the majority of the day. Messick carded just one birdie and three pars on the front nine, but he saved his best game for the back nine. With a birdie on Nos. 13, 14 and 18, Messick separated himself from the competition carding a 1-over-par 145 to take home his first IJGT title.

"There were a lot of great players out there," said Messick "The group {I was paired with} played great, and I knew I had to sink some birdie putts on the back nine to win."

Finishing just behind Messick was Tigani, who carded a 2-over-par 146. Finishing in third place was Eamon Marone of Belvidere, N.J., with a 3-over-par 147. Brandon Raihl of Wernersville, Pa., earned Clazic Belts Low Final Round honors after carding a second-round even-par 72 on Sunday.

In the Boys 14 & Under Division David Ross of Alexandria, Va., took a two-stroke first-round lead after carding a 1-over-par 72 on Saturday. With his four impressive birdies in the first round, Ross definitely had the momentum going into Sunday.

"I knew there were a lot of people behind me who could easily catch up," said Ross. "I just had to play the same game that I have been playing for seven years."

Ross started his second round with six pars on the front nine and still had the lead after the turn. Nate Menon of Wyomissing, Pa., was only two strokes behind heading into the back nine, which made for some exciting golf. Ross birdied No. 10 and pared his last six holes finishing with a tournament total 4-over-par 146 and his first IJGT title.

Finishing right behind Ross in second place was Menon carding a 6-over-par 146. Gus Minkin of York, Pa., and Luke Schaap of Potomac, Md., tied for third place after they both carded a 9-over-par 151.

Isabella DiLisio of Hatfield, Pa., started her weekend off strong with a 2-under-par 69 in her first round earning her KENTWOOL Lo-Pro honors. DiLisio carded four birdies and 12 pars on Saturday, which gave her a commanding nine-stroke lead heading into the second round.

"I tried not to focus on my first round score," said DiLisio. "I just wanted to pace myself and play one shot at a time."

DiLisio carried her momentum into Sunday by staying at 2-under-par for the tournament after the nine holes. Her back nine was equally as solid with two birdies and four pars rounding out a tournament total of 1-over-par 141. DiLisio earned her second IJGT Title two weeks after winning at the IJGT Philly Challenge at White Manor.

Brynn Walker of St. Davids, Pa., Alexis Hios of Rye, N.Y., and Liza Freed of Alexandria, Va., all tied for second place with a 16-over-par 158.

Although there were many great shots over the weekend none were more exciting moment than Freed's hole-in-one on the par-3 No. 13. It was her first career ace.
