International Junior Golf Tour

Final Results from IJGT at Hershey Links

Detmer Holds On For First Victory

The International Junior Golf Tour made its last stop in the northeast at Hershey Links Golf Course for the northeast finale of the fall season on Oct. 27-28. The links-style course was not the only test facing the competitors this weekend, as the effects of Hurricane Sandy could be felt around the course in the nationally ranked junior event.

Lee Detmer from Washington, D.C. came to Hershey Links for his first IJGT event of the season. Not knowing what to expect, Detmer just tried to concentrate on his game and navigate through the windy conditions on the open links style course. He was able to do just that as he walked away from the course on Saturday with the only round of the day in red figures with his opening round 71 (-1).

Detmer's offensive game plan seemed to have worked for him as his final round 79 (+7) gave him a one-stroke victory over Matthew Cleary from Greenville, Del. Cleary carded rounds of 75-76 for the runner-up finish. Eric Hall from Harwood, Md. and Armando Olivieri from Greenwich, Conn. rounded out the top competitors in the Boys 15-19 division, both with a two-day total of 153.

Anina Ku from Basking Ridge, NJ made her third appearance on the IJGT this fall. She came into the event at Hershey Links with one victory and one top-five finish under her belt, and was looking for more hardware to add to her collection. Ku's opening round 73 (+1) was strong enough to put her atop the Girls Division leaderboard after round one, but she had Susana Vik from Greenwich, Conn. right beside her with a 73 of her own on Saturday.

"I didn't want to get too focused on what she was doing," said Ku. "I wanted to repeat what I did yesterday, which I did pretty well."

Although Vik was coming into the event with a little momentum of her own, with a runner-up finish at the IJGT Major Championship at Architects Golf Club, she just could not keep up with Ku's consistency early on in the round. Ku's early lead over Vik proved to be more than enough to allow her to cruise to an 11-stroke victory. Linda Wang from Fresh Meadows, N.Y. posted a final round of 82 (+10) to sneak past Vik for second place with a tournament total of 157, while Vik's final round 86 (+14) left her in third place at the end of the weekend.

The Boys U-14 division proved to be the most exciting race as the weekend unfolded at Hershey Links. Luke Schaap from Potomac, Md. came to Hershey Links looking to finally step into the winners circle as he has finished in second place in his only two appearances on the IJGT this season. His opening round 72 (E) left him tied atop the leaderboard on Saturday with Gavin Rickert from Ijamsville, Md., who beat Schaap by two strokes in their matchup at the Labor Day Classic at Hershey Country Club.

Schaap and Rickert may have been the leaders on day one, but Ryan Skae from Old Tappan, N.J. and IJGT Major Champion John Felitto from Mountainside, N.J. found themselves only two shots back coming into the final round.

Sunday was full of excitement as the four young juniors traded birdies and bogeys all day long, as they battled for the Boys U-14 title. It came down to the last three holes to finally decide the winner, as Skae and Schaap had separated themselves from the pack and were tied coming down the stretch. Skae was able to edge out Schaap on those last three holes for his first IJGT victory of the season with a two-day total of 143 (-1). Schaap came up short for his third runner-up finish in three events on the tour this season, while Felitto followed up his Major Championship with an impressive third place finish.

Skae's final round 69 (-3) was enough to not only earn him the division title, but also the Boys Clazic Belts Low Final Round honor, while Ku's final round of 73 (+1) earned her the honor for the girls.

The IJGT will be heading south to warmer weather next week for the IJGT at Oyster Reef Golf Club in sunny Hilton Head Island, S.C., but the IJGT will be returning to Great Bay Golf Club in Somers Point, N.J. in March for the start of the spring season.
