McCabe Victorious at Jeffersonville Golf Club

Hopton Defeats Yao in Three-Hole Playoff

NORRISTOWN, Pa - The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) hosted the IJGT Philly Open on Sept. 14-15. Held at the Donald Ross designed Jeffersonville Golf Club, a field of 44 players ages 10-19 took on the course over the two-day, 36 hole event. The field was represented by junior golfers from four states competing for national rankings and IJGT Merit Points.

Gary McCabe of Collegeville, Pa., won the Boys 15-19 Division, turning a one-stroke deficit to begin the final round into a four-shot victory by the end.

Entering final round of competition, the division was wide open. Quinn Dolan of Broomall, Pa., held the lead when the day began after shooting a first-round 75. Chasing him was a pack of 10 players all within five strokes.

Dolan was joined by McCabe, Matthew Bastian of Media, Pa., and Chris Binet of Oreland, Pa., in the final group for the last round. Dolan quickly realized he was not as sharp as a day prior en route to playing the first 10 holes at 11-over-par. He was not the only player in the group struggling, though. Binet got himself into trouble on No. 11 and carded a triple-bogey to dash his chances of victory. Bastian carded three double-bogeys on the back nine to take himself out of contention.

McCabe kept plugging away at a course he used to call home, playing the first 11 holes in 1-over-par as he separated himself from the pack. A stretch of three straight bogeys made things interesting but he responded with three consecutive pars.

McCabe's biggest challenge came from Nick Geiman of York, Pa., and Eamon Marone of Belvidere, N.J., who finished in second place. Geiman shot a 3-over-par 73 on in the final round, winning the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, to finish at 155. Marone finished strong, playing the last six holes at 2-under-par to also finish at 155.

Both waited for McCabe to finish his round, in hopes of having a shot at the championship.
But McCabe never faltered and carded a final-round 5-over-par 75, totaling 151 for the tournament.

"I used the knowledge [of the course] to my advantage, and it's good to be back," McCabe said of his return trip to Jeffersonville Golf Club.

The Girls Division provided the best finish on the day as extra holes were needed to decide a winner. Carley Hopton of Madison, N.J., defeated Samantha Yao of Berwyn, Pa., on the third sudden-victory playoff hole to earn her first IJGT victory of the season and of her career.

Hopton trailed Yao, the leader after round one, by three strokes entering the final day, as Hopton shot an opening-round 87. Hopton had evened the score by the 27th hole, but fell behind after carding three straight double-bogeys.

Yao carried a three-stroke lead as the final group of her, Hopton, Victoria Ross of Spring Grove, Pa., and Esther Park of Wilmington, Del., headed to the 16th tee box.

Hopton carded par on the hole while Yao bogeyed to cut the lead to two. Hopton was able to par again on No. 17, tying the score as Yao double-bogeyed. On No. 18, Yao blasted her drive down the middle of the fairway, as Hopton found the rough. A par-5, unreachable in two, Yao laid up and Hopton was forced to punch out of a tough lie. Neither reached the green in three, but both had chances to make par. Both missed and they went to a sudden-victory playoff.

On hole No. 1, Hopton again found the rough with Yao sitting in the fairway. Hopton punched out from the trees and Yao's shot missed the green to the right. Hopton saved her championship dreams with an approach shot from just outside 100 yards that settled within two feet of the hole. Yao's chip from the rough stopped the same distance from the cup as Hopton's ball and they both tapped in for par.

The second playoff hole told the same story, with Yao in the fairway and Hopton in the rough. Yao's approach shot landed on the front of the green, but Hopton hit another great approach to leave herself under 10 feet for birdie. Yao missed her birdie putt and Hopton had a chance for victory but she missed her putt wide and they went to a third playoff hole.

Both players found the middle of the fairway off the tee, as their shots came to a stop within feet of each other. They were left inside 100 yards om the uphill par-4. Yao's shot landed in the right rough but kicked to the edge of the green and she had another opportunity for birdie. Hopton continued her fine approach shots and landed within 15 feet of the flagstick. Yao's long distance putt sped by the hole and she left herself six feet for par. Hopton could not convert on the birdie, as her ball slid by the hole. The pressure was on Yao to make her comebacker for par, but she was unable to convert. Hopton tapped her ball in for par and the 39-hole victory.

"I made a few really long putts," Hopton noted as the key to her victory.

Hopton's 82 on Sunday was also enough to earn her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round.Award.

In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Joe Parrini of York, Pa., continued his hot streak. Victorious at the Major Championship at Crystal Springs, Parrini followed up that performance by earning his second-consecutive IJGT Championship with this one coming at Jeffersonville Golf Club.

Parrini fired a 4-over-par 74 in the first round to give himself a comfortable lead entering the final round. He followed up his first-round performance with a 76 to finish with a total of 150, the lowest score in any division, and earn the win. Over his 36 holes, Parrini carded three birdies and 21 pars.

"I really found my driver. I was consistently hitting fairways," Parrini said following his round on the final day.

Garrett Engle of Harrisburg, Pa., finished second with a tournament total of 172, and Luke Sample of New York, N.Y., rounded out the top three carding a 174.
