Shin Makes Big Comeback in Girls Division

HERSHEY, Pa. - The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) held the first Fall 2013 Event in the Northeast region as the Labor Day Classic teed off at Hershey Country Club's East Course. Nearly 90 of the region's best golfers took aim on one of the favorite courses on the tour. The field was represented by juniors from seven states and three countries competing for national rankings and IJGT Merit Points.

The Hershey Country Club East Course is not to be taken lightly. Although featuring only three water hazards, the 100 plus bunkers presented the biggest challenge to this year's participants. Adding to the course's difficulties were elevated greens on all but three holes. The Fazio designed course has hosted numerous PGA events in the past and most recently held the Tour's Reese's Cup Classic.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Gerry Mackedon of Port Jefferson, N.Y., came out on top of the field. Mackedon shot a first round even-par 71, giving him a two-stroke lead and the KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro Award, which is given to the player who shoots the lowest score in the first round.

Playing in the final group on Sunday with Matthew Bastian of Media, Pa., Kwanwoo Kim of Tenafly, N.J., and Gus Minkin of York, Pa., the road to victory was not easy for 15-year-old Mackedon. After saving par on the first, Mackedon double-bogeyed the second hole. But, he regained his composure and birdied Nos. 4, 5, and 7 on his way to a front-nine score of 35.

As the group made the turn, it was Minkin and Vinay Ramesh of Newtown, Pa., playing in the group ahead, who presented the largest challenge to Mackedon. On No. 16, Ramesh birdied, Minkin made par, and Mackedon bogeyed, meaning the three were separated by only two strokes with two holes to play. Ramesh made par on the difficult 17th and Minkin's birdie on No. 17 put him within one, while Mackedon made par on the hole. However, Mackedon's par on 18, coupled with a bogey by Minkin, and another par by Ramesh closed the deal. Mackedon finished the day the same way he started it; with a two-stroke lead and now with the championship.

"I was glad my short game came through this week." stated Mackedon.

Minkin and Ramesh finished the tournament in a tie for second place with a tournament total of 3-over-par 145. Max Redetzke of Lakeville, Minn., shot the low round of the tournament Sunday, a 3-under-par 68, to win the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

The Boys 14 & Under Division also provided a late dramatic finish. Like Mackedon, Prescott Butler of Old Westbury, N.Y., came into Sunday with a two-shot lead on the field. Paired with Danny Dougherty of Wilmington, Del., Joe Parrini of York, Pa., and Chris Tanabe of Sewickley, Pa., Butler handled the pressure very well.

The lead belonged to Dougherty with three holes to play, who was one stroke ahead of Butler. But three consecutive bogeys for Dougherty coupled with three consecutive pars for Butler turned the tide and gave Butler the title.

When asked about the course, Butler stated; "The greens were a lot firmer yesterday and made the course a challenge."

The Girls Division was the only one to have a winner come from outside the final group, as Yeji Shin of Norwood, N.J., came back from three strokes down to capture the trophy. After shooting an 8-over-par 79, in the first round, Shin responded with a 76 in the final round. She birdied her final hole, and then waited as the final group, consisting of first-round co-leaders and KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro Award recipients Frida Henningsson of Rye, N.Y., and Megan McLean of Lebanon, N.J., completed their rounds.

"I did not think I had a chance [to win]," said Shin. "My putting saved me."

Shin's final-round score of 76 earned her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

Henningsson finished in second place with a tournament total of 156. McLean rounded out the top three with a score of 158.

The IJGT Northeast tour will be back at it next weekend in Hamburg, N.J. for the Major Championship at Crystal Springs. The tournament will be played at Crystal Springs's Great Gorge Course. To sign up for this Event, or others, visit or call 888.936.5327.
