IJGT Labor Day Classic at Hershey Country Club Final Results

Bina Comes from Behind to Win

The historic Hershey Country Club was the site of the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) Labor Day Classic. In this 36-hole event, players from across North America converged on central Pennsylvania for the nationally ranked event. The East Course, host of the 2011 PGA Professional National Championship, was the stage for many junior golfers to post very impressive performances.

Villanova, Pa. native, Carey Bina found himself six strokes behind Roland Massimino (Lumberville, Pa.) after the first day of the IJGT Labor Day Classic. He came into the final round with the confidence to be able to not only close that six-stroke gap, but also to win the event outright. Bina's second round 68 (-3) was just enough to edge out Massimino by a single stroke for the Boys 15-19 division championship on Sept. 2.

"I was actually pretty confident that I could do well today," said Bina. "The last time I was in a tournament six strokes back, with a 75, I won it! So I was pretty confident I could do it again."

Massimino finished one stroke behind as the division runner-up, while Doylestown, Pa. native, Joe Markmann, came in four strokes behind Bina for third place, despite being the talk of the course on Saturday with his ace on the par three 8th.

Bina's final round score of 68 earned him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

Abingdon, Va. native, Andrew Spiegler was sitting atop the leaderboard of the Boys U-14 division after the first day of the IJGT event at Hershey Country Club. He shot an impressive 73 (+2) to lead the pack by two strokes going into the final round on Sunday. Spiegler had to look no further than his own pairing in the final round to find his best competition as Gavin Rickert (Ijamsville, Md.) came out firing on in the final round, shooting even par (71) to capture the division championship by two strokes.

Rickert said his approach to mounting a come-from-behind victory on Sunday was to simply take it one shot at a time. It was Rickert's second round tee shot on the par three 16th, where he stuck his seven-iron to four feet away, that give him an extra boost of confidence coming down the final stretch.

Rickert's two-day total of 146 (+4) put him two strokes ahead of Luke Schaap from Potomac, Md., who's second round 70 (-1) just wasn't quite enough to overcome the gap left after his first round 78 (+7). Spiegler battled through some adversity on Sunday, but just dug himself too deep of a hole to climb out of as he finished with a final round 76 (+5) to leave him in the third spot in the division.

Erin Lo from Mount Laurel, N.J. and Lacey Bensing from Ephrata, Pa. had a three shot lead going into Sunday's final round at Hershey as they both shot and opening round 76 (+5) on Saturday. Lo, who is no stranger to the top of the leaderboard, was able to keep her composure and outlast the impressive field of ladies to win the Girls division championship by two strokes.

Her second round 76 (+5) was enough to fend off a run by Elma, N.Y. native, Michelle Hanes, who came back from a first round 81 (+10) to post a final round 73 (+2) leaving her a mere two strokes behind Lo. Claire Hernandez from Palgrave, ON rounded out the top three of the division with a two day total of 155 (+13).

Hanes final round score of 73 earned her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.
